Adair Co., OK (March 15, 2024) – Information provided by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol shows that an individual collided with a parked fire truck on Wednesday, March 13, at approximately 9:18 p.m. in Adair County.
The incident occurred on Highway 59 near Chewey Road, according to OHP. A news release states that a 2010 Hyundai Sonata was traveling south when the Westville Fire Department (WFD) was working at the scene of a two-vehicle accident. The fire truck was parked sideways on the roadway to block traffic when the driver of the Hyundai failed to move over and struck the truck. WFD states that the driver did not slow down despite the flashing lights on the fire truck. A passenger present in the Hyundai suffered injuries in the accident, according to reports. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment, however, they have not currently been identified. The report concerning the incident also noted that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim in hopes of a full recovery. No further information has been reported at this time, but police continue to investigate.
Oklahoma Traffic Collisions
The heartbreaking reality is that tens of thousands of car accidents take place per year in the state of Oklahoma that cause injuries to tens of thousands of people and take the lives of hundreds. In one recent year, over 700 people ended up losing their lives in fatal car crashes throughout the Sooner State. The majority of car accidents in Oklahoma are caused by drivers who are distracted. Speeding, intoxication, and distraction are the three main types of driver distraction that often lead to accidents, injuries, and fatalities in the state.
Across the country, the story remains the same. Driver negligence is the cause of over 90% of reported car crashes in the United States. Each year, millions of auto accidents happen due to the actions of intoxicated, speeding, fatigued, and distracted drivers. For example:
- Every year, more than 400,000 car crashes happen because of driver distraction. More than 3,000 people die annually due to this type of negligence.
- Driver fatigue is behind approximately 100,000 traffic collisions each year that take the lives of around 1,600 people each year.
- Speeding takes the lives of more than 12,000 people each year in the US.
- Intoxication ends the lives of around 11,000 people per year.
Driver negligence is dangerous and deadly. Choosing to remain awake, alert, sober, and aware while behind the wheel could mean the difference between life and death for everyone on the road. When a driver chooses to get behind the wheel while drunk, high, overtired, distracted, or while traveling at unsafe speeds, they risk their own life and the lives of everyone whom they may encounter on the road.
